Ribera del Duero

About the Area

Ribera del Duero, located in the heart of Spain along the Duero River, is one of the country’s most acclaimed wine regions, known for its bold and age-worthy red wines. Set on a high plateau with elevations between 750 and 1,000 meters, the region experiences a continental climate marked by hot days, cool nights, and extreme seasonal shifts—conditions that help grapes develop deep color, structure, and complexity while retaining freshness. The star grape is Tempranillo (locally called Tinta del País), which thrives in the region’s diverse soils, ranging from limestone to clay and gravel. Wines from Ribera del Duero are typically rich and full-bodied, with notes of dark berries, spice, and earth, and they often benefit from extended aging in oak. The combination of altitude, climate, and tradition has made Ribera del Duero a benchmark for powerful yet elegant Spanish reds.
